Bone evaluation follows the “cube concept” – bone mapping based on clinical measurements and radiographic evaluations of the orthopantomogram, represented as a column in the dental scheme. According to Misch, a bone volume with 5mm x 5mm base and 10 mm height should be provided as a basic need for implant placement prior to further site classification.

Engelke developed a bone mapping system (multiple cube concept) for teaching purposes and clinical use. The first step of implant planning with the cube concept is basic site-by-site bone mapping. Using four categories of vertical bone dimension –abundant (>20 mm), sufficient (>15mm), critical (>10 mm), and insufficient (<10mm) – and a single additional transverse measurement (I if < 5mm) – primary implant planning is completed.

Measurement of the bone width 5 mm below crest is required to classify the transverse bone dimension as “sufficient “or “insufficient”.
