Surgical implant placement after 3D planning may be supported online using optical tracking navigation systems, including dynamic computer-assisted guidance and 3D surgical guides.

Optical tracking system

The use of optical tracking systems requires an online representation of the planned implant position and the actual position of the drilling instrument. After placing the instrument in the patient’s mouth, the surgeon guides the instrument via an optical tracking system displayed on a computer screen. The patient’s anatomy, as well as the planned implant position, are available online while the cavity is being prepared. Owing to the extensive technical equipment necessary and the time-consuming individual calibration of the systems, optical tracking systems are not being frequently used in routine flapless implant surgery.

The drilling instrument is displayed virtually online in a projection of the 3D cross-sectional image at the implant site. Endoscopic control allows insight into the recently prepared implant cavity, thus providing quality control of transgingival flapless procedures.
