Flapless implantology Implant failure rate and peri-implant bone loss after surgery
Implant failure is commonly classified as either early or late. Early (primary) failure are those where there is an inability to establish osseointegration-all the failures that occur during the period between implant placement to abutment connection of the implant.
Late (secondary) failures are those where there is an inability to maintain the stablished osseointegration – all the failures that occur after prosthetic rehabilitation.
Failure rate and crestal bone loss in the early phase
A prospective clinical study was carried out to evaluate the implants with respect to failure rates and overall degree of peri-implant bone loss in the early phase after soft tissue punch nonsubmerged and mini-incision submerged implant surgery. Patients who required sinus grafting procedures were also included in this study. All patients were treated at the same university clinic, and all implants were placed by the same surgeon. The secondery procedures were initiated at 3 months (mandible) and 4 months (maxilla) after implant installation. In the second surgery , conventional dental radiographs were taken and the stability of the implant was evaluated.
Osseointegration occurred in all 213 patients with 432 implants with no failure.
The average bone loss was 0.4 mm in the soft tissue punch nonsubmerged group and 0.1 mm incision submerged group.
