Flapless implantology Failure rate and crestal bone loss in the late phase

A prospective clinical study was also carried out to determine the late failure rates after soft tissue punch nonsubmerged or mini-incision submerged implant surgery. For all patients in the study, the placement of implants was performed by the same surgeon. For the 2 years after their implant placement, the implants were evaluated with respect to the failure rate and peri-implant bone loss. For an assessment of peri-implant bone loss, conventional dental radiographs were taken immediately after placement and 2 years later.

Comparison of the films from these two dates indicated that osseointegration occurred in all 142 implants in 83 patients with no failure.

The average bone loss was 0.4 mm in the soft tissue punch group abd 0.3 mm in the mini-incision group.

One of the major determinants of implant success is bone loss around the implants as measured annually. According to these success criteria, the average marginal bone loss should be less than 1.5 mm during the first year of function and less than 0.2 mm annually thereafter.
