Diagnostic casts allow dentists to evaluate a patient’s intra oral condition and to plan treatment. Such casts mounted using an accurate record of the centric jaw relationship and maxillomandibular occlusion on a semiadjustable articulator provide information related to treatment that influences the final prosthodontics treatment plan. The casts assist in evaluating the vertical and horizontal relationship of the maxilla and mandible. These casts also influence implant location, size, and angulation.

Measurement of mucosal thickness

The third component of multiparametric planning is the measurement of the mucosal thickness at the implant site to control the depth of drilling above the mucosa. In addition, in edentulous sites with an increased soft tissue height, the soft tissue’s geometry is an important consideration in the decision for ridge augmentation.

The simplest method of measuring the mucosal thickness is with a needle. The needle is equipped with an endodontic stop and is inserted through the patient’s mucosa overlying the implant site. The mucosal thickness is measured on the crest, facial, and lingual areas.
