Flapless implantology Contamination of the implant by soft tissue contact

The implant surface may be contaminated by soft tissue contact during the flapless implant procedure.

Some authors have argued that it is important to avoid contamination of the implant surface with bacteria and biological molecules; that is to avoid saliva and foreign body contamination during the surgical insertion of implants in the jaws.

To prevent contamination of the implant surface, the mucoperiosteum is elevated to exposethe underlying bone and keepthe mucosa away from the implants during surgical insertion in the jaw.

In contrast preoperative soft tissue contamination of titanium implants does not prevent osseointegration.

It is also recommended that soft tissue should not be inserted intothe bone holes during implant placement.

Experimented evidence failed to indicate any soft tissue contact-related causes for implant failures. Note, the osseointegration and soft tissue attachment aroundthe implant 3 months after flapless implant placement.
