Flapless implantology Comparison of soft tissue punch and Mini-Insision techniques

Flapless implant surgery can be classified into two types, the soft tissue punch technique and the mini-incision technique.

The first requires circumferential incision in the gingiva at the center of the implant site with the removal of some attached gingiva (the size of the implant diameter).  After implant placement, abutments are connected immediately to the fixtures such that the coronal portion of the abutments remains exposed to the oral cavity.

In contrast,mini-incision implant placement requires a crestal mini-incision and local undermining  (the range of the implant diameter) at the implant site. After implant placement, the crestal incision is closed, submerging the implant.

The soft tissue punch technique is used for a one-stage surgical approach, whereas the mini-incision technique is used for either a one-stage or a two-stage surgical approach.

The two-stage surgical process places the implant body below the soft tissue until bone healing has occurred.

The choice is dependent on the bone quality and primary implant stability.
