Scrubbing around and within the mouth with the agent reduces the risk of a bacterial smear layer resulting from unintentional contamination by direct contact with the implant or indirectly via a glove or instrument. Antibacterial mouth rinses such as chlorhexidine reduce the bacterial count in saliva significantly. It is important to perform meticulous preoperative disinfection. Infiltration with 2% lidocaine containing 1:100,000 epinephrine should be performed at the implant site.

Further infiltration is required through the osteotomy site into the bone after the initial osteotomy preparation with a pilot drill.
